Emergency Accommodation Loans

Sometimes the most urgent cost is simply a safe place to sleep tonight. Here's where to find real crisis housing support first, and how a Pay Advance or Personal Loan can help once you know what you're actually facing: a few nights away from home, or a full relocation.

Emergency accommodation help: crisis support first, then real ways to cover the cost

There are times when you may need access to money to cover an expense, whether it’s something unexpected or a cost that’s come up sooner than planned.

A burst pipe, a house fire, or a situation at home you need to leave: sometimes the most pressing cost isn't rent or a bond, it's simply finding somewhere safe to sleep tonight. If that's where you are right now, the first thing to know is that there is support built for exactly this, and it's worth checking before you consider borrowing anything.

If you're in a housing crisis right now

If you've lost your accommodation or are at risk of losing it, several services exist specifically to help, and most of them are free or interest-free:

  • State bond loan schemes are interest-free and worth checking first: NSW's Rentstart Bond Loan (via Service NSW), Queensland's Bond Loan and Rental Grant (via Queensland Housing), and similar schemes in Victoria, South Australia and WA.
  • Commonwealth Rent Assistance, paid through Centrelink, can reduce ongoing rental pressure if you're eligible.
  • Crisis and homelessness services can often place you somewhere safe the same day: Link2Home in NSW on 1800 152 152, Launch Housing in Victoria, and your state's housing crisis line generally.
  • Services Australia's Crisis Payment may apply if your accommodation loss follows an extreme circumstance such as a disaster, family violence, or release from an institution.

None of this is a sales pitch. If this is genuinely your situation, these services are set up to help you directly, and they should be your first call. If your immediate need is smaller than a full housing crisis, for instance covering a few nights away from home or funding a move to a new place, the rest of this page sets out how that's costed and where Beforepay's products fit.

A few nights away from home

If something's gone wrong at home and you need a motel or short-term stay while it's sorted out, the cost is usually smaller than people expect, and it scales with location. Budget regional motels run about $70 to $100 a night, mid-range accommodation is $130 to $180 a night, and capital city hotels average $230 to $275 a night (source: Oysterlink, average daily hotel room rates). A few nights typically lands somewhere between $100 and $600 in total.

That range sits comfortably within a Pay Advance, which covers $50 to $2,000, repaid in up to 4 instalments aligned to your pay cycle, over a maximum term of 62 days. The cost is a fixed 5% setup fee plus interest of up to 24% p.a.: on a $300 stay, the setup fee is 5% of $300, which is $15, plus interest calculated on the amount and time outstanding. There's no traditional credit check, no late fees and no early repayment fees. Approval is typically decided in under 60 seconds, and approved funds can land in as little as 5 minutes, though transfer times can depend on your bank. Check the eligibility criteria before applying: 18 or over, an Australian resident, employed with a regular wage, less than 51% of income from Centrelink, and valid Australian ID.

Relocating and setting up somewhere new

Moving somewhere new after losing your accommodation is a different scale of cost entirely, closer to a full relocation than a short stay. The national median rent was $702 a week as at October 2025 (source: Cotality, via Forbes Advisor), which puts a standard 4-week bond at roughly $2,808, plus 2 weeks of rent in advance at roughly $1,404. That's a typical total around $4,200, with lower-cost areas closer to $2,400 and capital cities, or tenancies requiring a 6-week bond, running to $6,000 or more.

That tier is Personal Loan territory. A Beforepay Personal Loan covers $2,001 to $5,000 over a term of 3 to 12 months, giving you longer to repay a larger, one-off cost than a few weeks would allow. The same fixed 5% setup fee applies: on a $3,000 loan, that's 5% of $3,000, which is $150, plus interest of up to 24% p.a. over your chosen term. There's no traditional credit check, no late fees and no early repayment fees, and because the amount and term are larger, Beforepay will ask what the loan is for so it can be matched to your situation. If the total you need is closer to $2,400, at the low end, that may sit either side of the Pay Advance ceiling depending on exactly what you're covering, so it's worth working out your real number before you apply.

Before applying for either product, get the real figure from whoever is asking for the money. A motel will quote its nightly rate directly, and a new agent or landlord will confirm the exact bond (usually 4 weeks' rent, sometimes more depending on your state) and how much rent in advance they require. Borrowing to the actual number, rather than a rough estimate, keeps the cost of the loan itself as low as it can be, since interest accrues on the amount outstanding and the time it's outstanding.

Already just need help with a standard bond or rent?

This page is scoped to accommodation needs that follow something going wrong: an urgent short stay, or a fast relocation. If you're simply moving into a new place under normal circumstances, Beforepay has pages built specifically for that: bond loans cover the bond and rent in advance for a new tenancy, and rent loans cover ongoing rent when a pay cycle and a rent due date don't quite line up. Both work the same way as the products described above, just applied to a planned move rather than an emergency one.

Eligibility and getting a clearer picture of your costs

Whichever product fits, the eligibility bar is the same: 18 or over, an Australian resident, employed with a regular wage, less than 51% of total income from Centrelink, and valid Australian ID, with no traditional credit check either way. You can only hold one active Beforepay loan at a time. If you'd like help mapping out what a move or a short stay will actually cost before you decide anything, the Budgeting and Insights tools can help you see the full picture.

This page is factual information only, not financial advice, and is not a substitute for crisis housing services. If you're in immediate danger or at risk of homelessness tonight, please contact the crisis services listed above rather than relying on this page alone.

Common Questions

Transparent answers for confident borrowing.

What should I do if I need emergency accommodation tonight and can't afford it?

Start with crisis services rather than a loan. Link2Home (NSW, 1800 152 152), Launch Housing (VIC) and your state's housing crisis line can often place you somewhere safe the same day, and Services Australia's Crisis Payment may apply if your situation follows an extreme circumstance such as family violence or a disaster. These exist specifically to help in this situation, often at no cost, so they're worth checking before considering anything else.

What's the difference between this page and Beforepay's bond loan?

This page covers urgent, short-notice accommodation costs: a motel stay after something goes wrong at home, or a fast relocation. The bond loan page covers the bond and rent in advance for a planned move into a new tenancy, and the rent loan page covers ongoing rent when timing is tight. All three draw on the same Beforepay products, just applied to different situations.

Can I use a Pay Advance to pay for a motel or short-term stay?

Yes, if the cost fits within $50 to $2,000. A few nights in a motel or hotel typically runs $100 to $600 in total depending on location, which sits comfortably inside that range. Pay Advance is repaid in up to 4 instalments aligned to your pay cycle over a maximum of 62 days, with a fixed 5% setup fee and interest of up to 24% p.a., no traditional credit check, no late fees and no early repayment fees.

How much does emergency relocation actually cost?

It depends on rent in your area, but as a guide: with the national median rent at $702 a week (October 2025), a standard 4-week bond plus 2 weeks in advance comes to roughly $4,200 in total, with lower-cost areas closer to $2,400 and capital cities or 6-week-bond tenancies reaching $6,000 or more. That scale generally fits a Personal Loan ($2,001 to $5,000 over 3 to 12 months) rather than a Pay Advance. Always confirm the exact bond and rent figures with your new landlord or agent.

Is Beforepay a crisis accommodation service?

No. Beforepay is a lender offering Pay Advance and Personal Loan products, not a housing or crisis service. If you're facing homelessness or an unsafe living situation, please contact a dedicated service first, such as Link2Home (NSW, 1800 152 152), Launch Housing (VIC) or your state's housing crisis line, or Services Australia for Crisis Payment. Beforepay's products may help once you know the specific cost you're covering, such as a short stay or a relocation bond.
