Loans for Students

Whether you meet Beforepay's eligibility as a student depends on whether your wage is the bigger share of your income. Here's how that test works, and where to find real help either way.

Eligibility here comes down to whether your wage or your study payment is the bigger share of your income.

There are times when you may need access to money to cover an expense, whether it’s something unexpected or a cost that’s come up sooner than planned.

Can students get a Beforepay loan?

It depends on where your income comes from, and it's worth being clear on both sides of that. If you're a full-time student with no job, or your income is mostly Youth Allowance, Austudy or a similar payment, you're very unlikely to meet Beforepay's eligibility criteria: Beforepay needs a regular income pattern to work out whether a loan is realistically affordable, and that means employment with a regular wage as well as less than 51% of total income from Centrelink. If you're working a part-time or casual job alongside study, and that wage is the larger share of your income, the answer can be genuinely different, and this page treats that reader as just as real as the one it isn't right for.

The residency requirement, stated plainly

Beforepay's eligibility criteria also require you to be an Australian resident. That's a plain requirement worth checking against your own situation before anything else on this page, rather than something to read around or guess at.

The income test: Youth Allowance, Austudy and wages

The full eligibility list is: 18 or over, an Australian resident, employed with a regular wage, less than 51% of total income from Centrelink, and valid Australian ID. See the Beforepay eligibility criteria for the complete detail.

Youth Allowance and Austudy are both Centrelink payments, so they count towards that limit the same way a pension does. A student whose only income is a study payment has no wage at all in the mix, which on its own doesn't meet the "employed with a regular wage" requirement, separately from the Centrelink share.

Got a part-time job? Here's how that changes things

A student earning a genuine, regular wage from part-time or casual work moves into different territory once that wage becomes the larger share of total income, rather than the study payment. In plain terms, the practical test is whether your wage outweighs your Youth Allowance or Austudy. Beforepay doesn't publish an exact formula or a set measurement period for this, so if your hours or pay vary week to week, know that the assessment looks at your actual income pattern over time rather than a single pay slip. This applies whether you're at university, TAFE or in an apprenticeship: what matters to Beforepay is the mix of Centrelink payment and wage, not which course you're enrolled in. The only way to know for certain where you stand is to apply and have your actual income assessed; nothing here is a promise of approval.

If you meet the criteria, here's how Pay Advance and Personal Loan work

Pay Advance covers $50 to $2,000, repaid in up to 4 instalments aligned to your pay cycle, over a maximum term of 62 days. Personal Loan covers $2,001 to $5,000 over 3 to 12 months. Both carry a fixed 5% setup fee and interest of up to 24% p.a., with no late fees and no early repayment fees, and neither runs a traditional credit check. Approval is typically decided in under 60 seconds, with funds landing in as little as 5 minutes. Only one Beforepay loan can be active at a time.

One thing worth being upfront about: a Beforepay loan is built for a genuine, short-term income gap, not for funding the cost of study itself. Course fees, textbooks and other study costs are usually better covered by the options in the next section, which don't carry a setup fee or interest.

If study payments are most of your income, here's what can help instead

If the test above rules a Beforepay loan out for you, or if what you actually need help with is a study cost rather than a short-term gap, these are worth trying first:

  • University financial aid and hardship grants. Most Australian universities run a student hardship or emergency assistance fund, and student services can point you to it. These often cover exactly the kind of cost, textbooks, rent, an unexpected bill, that a loan gets used for, without any fee or interest.
  • Centrelink advance payments. If you receive Youth Allowance or Austudy, you may be able to bring forward part of an upcoming payment through Services Australia, generally with no interest charged.
  • The No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS). Delivered through Good Shepherd and community partner organisations, NILS offers genuinely interest-free, fee-free small loans for essential goods and services to people on a low income, including many students.
  • A payment plan. For course fees, rent or a bill, ask the biller or your institution directly about a payment plan before borrowing. Most will say yes.
  • Your student union or association. Many have a small advocacy or welfare team who can point you to grants, food relief and rent assistance you might not know exists, on top of the university's own hardship fund.

None of these carry a setup fee or interest, which is exactly why they're worth ruling out before you consider a loan for a study-related cost. If the pressure is more about everyday budgeting than one bill, the Budgeting and Insights tools can help you see where a student income is actually going, and where a small change might free up more room than a loan would.

Free help if you're a student under pressure

Free, confidential financial counselling is available through the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007, regardless of whether you're a student. It isn't run by a lender, there's no cost, and no judgement, just practical help working out what fits your situation, including whether a hardship grant, NILS, a payment plan or something else makes more sense than borrowing.

This page is factual information only, not financial advice. Whether Beforepay, a hardship grant, NILS or a call to the National Debt Helpline is the right next step depends on your own circumstances.
